Sine Qua Non

Logline:
A power struggle unfolds in the Colonial fleet following the disappearance of the Cylon basestar with President Roslin trapped onboard.
Sine Qua Non is a Latin term which means “a condition of which it could not be” or “without which there is nothing.” To further analyze the quote, it basically means something it needed for something to happen. (Like yeast to make bread rise.)
Two favorite characters return. First, it’s our friend the lawyer Romo who almost immediately starts to conspire to get Lee Adama installed as president (but before that, he tries to kill Lee). Anyways, already the audience is getting the feeling that this episode is going to be well—boring.
Unlike my previous recaps, I’m going to this recap as commentary on what is wrong with the episode.
The episode picks up with Roslin and half of Galactica’s pilots aboard the cylon baseship that “jumped” as soon as the hybrid was patched in. Yawn!
The next 42 minutes seems to just be a painful trip down—some half-cocked, half-baked story.
The fleet is concerned Roslin is dead. They want a new president. Admiral Adama won’t deal with Zarek. So Apollo (er, Delegate Lee Adama) seeks out his old pal Romo Lamkin (and his dead cat—Romo is crazier than when we lost saw him in Crossroads part 2). They want to find a president that Papa Adama will deal with. They can’t find anybody.
Meanwhile, after Athena capped Natalie, Doc Cottle tries his best to save the turncoat cylon. He can’t. She dies. He does some blood tests on the Six in the Brig. He finds something interesting. Six is with child. Guess who the daddy is?
Colonel Tigh and Admiral Adama beat each other up.
(Which makes me start to think the following: If Saul Tigh is a cylon and since cylons cannot procreate by themselves, then how in blazes did she become pregnant? One of the guards? Perhaps Baltar had a midnight rendezvous? Or is there a way around the quagmire of cylons not being able to procreate? Details to follow, I’m sure.)
Racetrack finds a raptor. Lieutenant Pike is dead. Aboard the raptor is the book Adama gave Roslin. Adama decides he cannot lose another one of this “women” and decides he needs to find Roslin and the others.
Oh yeah, Starbuck is CAG. Athena is in the brig.
The episode ends with Romo nearly capping Lee and Lee becoming president, someone of which Adama could surely deal with. The only problem is, Adama turns Galactica over to Tigh (we all know what happened the last time—only this time it’s like turning the hen house over to the wolf).
The episode ends with the fleet jumping away. Leaving “Husker” alone in the raptor with his book waiting for the baseship.
Aww…
Next week on Galactica Love Boat (er Battlestar Galactica): Lucy Lawless returns as Number Three. Will the final cylon be revealed? Will Bill find his love? Will Helo learn that Athena hasn’t changed? Will the Galactica pilots fight for the cylons?
